Earth Day 2025

A Photo Essay

The first Earth Day took place when I was a student at the University of Michigan in 1970. Since then I’ve written several articles about this day. If you’re interested, you can read one of my previous Earth Day articles here.

Today, instead of renewing some of my thoughts about Earth Day, I’ll recall my connection to nature and the environment through some of the photographs that celebrate some our nation’s treasured locations.

A lone hiker venturing onto the Mesquite Dunes of Death Valley National Park
Horses grazing in the meadow at the foot of the Grand Tetons.
The iconic Delicate Arch rises above the rocky surroundings in Arches National Park
Hiking to HiddenLake on a trail in Glacier National Park

A pair of elk grazing at the summit in Rocky Mountain National Park
Overlooking the Atlatntic Ocean at Acadia National Park
A fern in the rain forest in Olympic National Park
The Merced River winding through Yosemite National Park
Crowded American White Pelicans in Everglades National Park
A Bighorn Sheep grazing in Badlands National Park
A travertine terrace at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park
A garden of Cholla Cactus in Joshua Tree National Park

During the 55 years since the first Earth Day I’ve had the lucky opportunity to visit so many of the amazing places on this part of the Earth. Get out and enjoy.
